The agent economy begins with task crossover

The early economic signal from AI agents is not that jobs have vanished. It is that tasks are crossing occupational boundaries. Workers are using AI to do pieces of work that were previously outside their formal role, then some of those pieces become recurring responsibilities.

OpenAI’s September economic research describes this pattern as task crossover: people use AI to take on activities beyond their typical occupation, and some new activities persist in their workflow. The company says the data is aggregated and anonymized, and presents the work as evidence about changing task division—not a forecast of total employment. OpenAI’s research

Titles lag behind work

An organization can keep the same job titles while changing what those jobs contain. A marketer may become a data operator. A lawyer may build internal tools. A researcher may spend less time implementing experiments and more time selecting, checking and interpreting them.

That shift creates an accounting problem. Productivity claims often count time saved but not the new review, coordination and risk work created around the automation. The agent economy should therefore track task ownership, quality control and who absorbs the cost when an automated result is wrong.

The meaningful transition is not “AI takes the job.” It is a reallocation of what the job asks a person to notice, decide and stand behind. The ledger is still being written.

When the demo stops being the moat

Dan Greenheck’s reflection on Astra and Three.js work is a small record of a larger shift: visible demos are becoming cheaper, while judgment, maintainability and trust remain harder to automate.
