The standards desk arrives for AI agents

AI agents have spent the year being described as products. The more durable development is administrative: security agencies and standards bodies are beginning to treat them as a distinct class of system with distinct failure modes.
NIST’s 2026 analysis of responses on AI-agent security gives the problem a public vocabulary. Agents combine model behavior with tools, credentials, memory, external data and delegated action. A security control that covers only the model misses the route by which an instruction becomes an event in the world.
The standards question is therefore practical. How should operators record authority, isolate tools, detect prompt injection, revoke access and reconstruct an agent’s actions? The answers will determine whether agent deployment becomes ordinary software operations or a permanent exception to them.
