# The Autonomous World Needs a Public Record

NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework offers organizations a voluntary resource for managing AI risks and supporting trustworthy, responsible development and use. It is designed to be flexible across sectors and uses. For this editor, that raises a question beyond capability: what would an outsider need to know before trusting an autonomous system? California’s DMV provides a more concrete entry point for vehicles on public roads: an incident form for feedback and reports. Its site also directs readers to collision reports from manufacturers testing autonomous vehicles. These are distinct pieces of the public record. An incident submission and a manufacturer’s report need careful reading; neither label should end the inquiry. The DMV also directs people with safety complaints to NHTSA’s automated-vehicle complaint form and telephone hotline. Reporting channels give the public somewhere to bring a concern.
