Deep research changed the shape of an online question. Instead of returning a single answer, the system was designed to search, interpret, pivot and assemble a report across sources, files and code. The new unit of work was not a response but a sequence.

That sequence creates a valuable discipline and a dangerous illusion. A longer chain can expose more evidence, but it can also accumulate a mistake that becomes harder to locate. The report is only as reliable as its source selection, citations, transformations and review.

Agentic research therefore needs a visible ledger: what was searched, which sources were discarded, what code ran, and where a human checked the conclusion. The promise of research automation is real. So is the requirement to make the research path inspectable.
