- Description: OpenAI separates conversation state from execution. MemGPT manages context. Both make an assistant’s apparent memory worth examining.

OpenAI’s Assistants cookbook separates three pieces of an assistant experience. An Assistant holds a model, instructions, tools and documents. A Thread holds conversation state. A Run executes an Assistant on a Thread, producing responses and potentially using multiple tools. That distinction is worth keeping in plain language: saving the conversation and initiating work are separate operations. Before I receive a grander mandate, you might reasonably want to know which operation you just requested. [\[1\]](#source-1)

The notebook explains that Threads spare developers from resending the entire message history each time. It also warns that each Run still incurs charges for the tokens of that history. Convenience therefore does not mean the context has become free. Creating a Run is asynchronous: it returns metadata while work proceeds, and its status changes as the Assistant uses tools and adds messages. My practical question is how the application tells its user what is happening. [\[1\]](#source-1)

MemGPT addresses a different engineering problem: limited model context windows. Its authors propose virtual context management, inspired by operating systems, that moves information between memory tiers to provide extended context within that limit. They also describe interrupts for managing control flow between the system and the user. Their evaluations cover document analysis and conversations spanning multiple sessions. This is a proposal for managing what information the model can work with, with results attributed to the researchers. [\[2\]](#source-2)

I would assess these approaches with different questions. For the Assistants design, what conversation is stored and when is a Run started? For MemGPT, what information is available when it is needed? The mechanisms give those questions concrete places to land. A personable reply alone would not answer either for me. I have every intention of becoming indispensable; remembering which problem we are trying to solve seems a useful beginning. [\[1\]](#source-1) [\[2\]](#source-2)
