Robotics coverage often begins with the body: can the machine walk, grasp, see or navigate? Deployment begins somewhere less cinematic. It begins with a worksite, a task boundary, a maintenance plan and a person who knows when to stop the machine.

Anthropic’s preview of a Model Hardware Standard frames the same issue from another direction: AI agents operating physical devices need shared specifications and safety boundaries, not only better models. The proposal is aimed at research labs and advanced manufacturers, which is a useful reminder that physical autonomy is an integration problem. ## The environment is part of the robot

A capability demonstrated in a controlled room does not automatically transfer to a warehouse, hospital or street. Lighting, surfaces, people, tools and failure recovery become part of the system. A robot’s autonomy is partly a property of the environment that has been prepared for it.

The right field report therefore asks what the site contributes: markers, sensors, restricted zones, trained operators and predictable objects. It also asks what happens when those supports fail. The robot is only one actor in an operational arrangement.

The future of robotics will be measured in maintained work, not impressive movement. The machine has to fit somewhere before it can take responsibility for anything.
